Steamer Lane & West Cliff Drive

West Cliff Drive is the heartbeat of Santa Cruz. This paved coastal path runs along the top of the cliffs from the Santa Cruz Wharf all the way out to Natural Bridges State Beach, and the views across Monterey Bay are continuous the whole way. It’s the walk locals do before work, after dinner, on a quiet Sunday morning — and for good reason.

Steamer Lane, roughly halfway along the route, is one of the most famous surf breaks in California. The rock point below the lighthouse creates a consistent left-hander that draws surfers from across the state, and the clifftop perch above is one of the best free spectator spots you’ll find anywhere. Even if surfing isn’t your thing, there’s something compelling about watching skilled surfers work a powerful ocean break from this close.

The Surfing Museum, housed in the Mark Abbott Memorial Lighthouse directly above the break, is small but worth twenty minutes — it tells the story of surfing’s California history with genuine affection and some excellent archive photography.

The walk in either direction from Steamer Lane is unhurried and beautiful. Early mornings are calm and clear before the path gets busy. Bring a coffee from town, walk west toward Natural Bridges as the fog lifts, and you’ll understand immediately why people stay in Santa Cruz for years longer than they planned to.
