Bantam

Bantam is the restaurant Santa Cruz locals go to when they want to make an occasion of it, and it delivers every time. Set on Fair Avenue a short drive from the waterfront, the space is warm and unhurried — exposed wood, an open kitchen, and a wood-fired oven at the heart of everything.

The menu changes with the season, which means what you’re eating reflects what’s actually good right now. Expect dishes built around local produce, well-sourced proteins, and the kind of careful cooking that doesn’t need to announce itself. The wood-fired flavours run through everything — there’s a smokiness and char to the food that you can’t replicate any other way.

The wine list is thoughtful without being encyclopaedic, and the front-of-house team knows it well enough to help you navigate. It’s a good place to take your time.

Reservations are strongly recommended, particularly on weekends. If you’re visiting in summer, book a day or two ahead. The restaurant isn’t large, and it fills consistently.

Bantam works well for a couple’s dinner, a celebratory meal with friends, or any evening where you want the food to be the main event. Check your availability here and we’ll send local recommendations with your booking confirmation.
