How to Plan the Perfect Santa Cruz Coastal Getaway: Itinerary, Packing and Getting Here

DSC05725

A great Santa Cruz trip doesn’t require much planning — but a little goes a long way. Here’s everything worth knowing before you arrive.

Getting to Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz sits about 75 miles south of San Francisco, roughly a 90-minute drive on Highway 1 along the coast (allow longer on summer Fridays — traffic on Highway 17 over the mountains from San Jose can back up significantly). The coastal route on Highway 1 from Half Moon Bay is slower but genuinely beautiful. The nearest major airports are San Jose Mineta (SJC, about 40 minutes) and San Francisco International (SFO, about 90 minutes). There’s no direct train to Santa Cruz, so a rental car is the most practical option if you’re flying in.

What to Pack

Pack in layers. Even in summer, Santa Cruz mornings can be cool and foggy — a light jacket you can shed by noon is the move. For the beach itself: a good quality beach towel, reef-safe sunscreen, and something to sit on. If you’re planning any time on the coastal trails, a comfortable pair of walking shoes covers most terrain. For evenings, the town is relaxed — smart casual is more than enough for any restaurant on the list.

A Three-Day Framework

Day 1 — Arrive and settle in. Get groceries, walk down to the waterline, and let the pace of the ocean set the tone. Dinner at the Wharf.

Day 2 — Explore. Morning surf or a walk along West Cliff Drive. Head to Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park in the afternoon for a complete contrast — massive ancient trees just 20 minutes inland. Early dinner at Bantam or Laili.

Day 3 — Capitola and the coast. The village of Capitola is 10 minutes south — good coffee, independent shops, and a pretty beach that’s slightly more sheltered than the main Santa Cruz breaks. On the way back, the cement ship at Seacliff State Beach is worth a stop.

One Tip Worth Keeping

Don’t over-schedule. The best version of a Santa Cruz trip has some unplanned hours in it. Leave room to follow the morning in whatever direction it takes you.
